Summer Landscape

Herman Herzog, a prolific artist throughout his impressive eighty-five-year career, found his greatest muse in travel. Born in Bremen, Germany, Herzog embarked on his artistic journey at the tender age of seventeen when he enrolled at the Düsseldorf Academy. It was here that he encountered the influential Andreas Achenbach (1815-1910), whose teachings left an indelible mark on Herzog’s unique painting style. Another notable mentor was the Norwegian artist Hans Frederick Gude (1825-1903), who passionately encouraged Herzog to explore the scenic landscapes of Norway.

In 1855, Herzog’s transformative voyage to Norway exposed him to the awe-inspiring and untamed beauty of nature. He showcased his talent across the continent, earning accolades in esteemed cities like Paris, Liège, and Brussels. Disquieted by the political turmoil in Germany, Herzog made the life-changing decision to immigrate to the United States. Then making West Philadelphia his new home, where he, alongside his wife, raised two sons. Even before his arrival on American soil, Herzog’s paintings had already graced the annual exhibitions of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.

Herzog’s first documented sketching expedition in the United States was in 1871 when he traversed the Northeast. These journeys held a pivotal role in shaping his art. He continually drew inspiration from his travel sketches, spanning from his early European experiences to those in the United States. Herzog’s wanderlust led him to explore the diverse American landscapes. It resulting in numerous depictions of the Pennsylvania countryside, the Western frontier, including its national parks, the picturesque Eastern coast reaching as far as Maine, and the lush landscapes of Florida, where he frequently visited his son from the mid-1890s to around 1910.

The art world warmly embraced Herzog’s work, and his astute financial investments. They are largely from the proceeds of his paintings, eventually allowed him to cease selling his art, preserving it within his family. The Schwarz Gallery has meticulously curated Herzog’s artworks for many years. Culminating in the publication of a dedicated catalog in December 1979 titled “Herman Herzog (1832 1932).” Notably, the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, celebrated Herzog’s legacy in 1992 with a significant exhibition, “American Paintings of Herman Herzog,” featuring an illuminating essay by Donald S. Lewis, Jr.
