What should I paint?
This question arises when you are extremely bored and want to do something creative. You want to paint something easy on canvas, or try some cool things with the colors on paper. So, instead of beating around the bush, I’ll directly jump to some painting ideas that I had thought of.
Some easy painting ideas:
- Leaf
- Bottle
- A Flower
- Flower vase
- Basket
- Decorative notebook
- Coffee mug
- eye
- Sunset colors
- A picture of a cute little pet of yours
- Fruits
- A book shelf
- Paint the night sky
- A boat on still water
When I don’t feel like doing something really intense or time taking, I usually go for painting or sketching ‘eyes’. I find it really appealing when the end result is realistic. You can try something like this.
Don’t know what to paint next? More ideas, especially for those who are not beginners, but already professionals.
1. Paint what you are passionate about : Travel, Nature, Politics, Fashion, Music. You can try the abstract version of it, something that flows within you. Imagine, Imagine!!
2. Paint something abstract : Like some textures, color mixtures, shapes, lines, transparancies. You can try and connect emotions with it. Think!
3. Portraits : Paint people around you, their mannerisms, their faces, gestures. Add abstracts to it, textures to it.

- Fabric – Canvas, Clothes, Shoes, T-shirts

What paint should I use?
Use anything available at that moment that can include:
- Pencils – sketching could be best to start with
- Marker pens – No matter if there are just 2 colors, try and make patterns and come up with amazing designs.
- Poster colors
- Crayons – I bet everyone has this in their house lying here and there in the corners of the drawers!
- Watercolors
- Acrylic colors – you can use tubes to start with
- Oil Paints – A bit more, when you want have lots of time in your hands.
If you’ve never picked up a paintbrush in your life, and want to start with it, these are some great ideas for you. Furhter more, the painting ideas above can be used by beginners who don’t know where to start with.
Also, These can also be used as an practice for those who want to take a break from large heavy paintings, and try some little accomplishments for time being.
Try some painting exercises as well to boost up your creativity. For example,
- Draw without looking at the paper, and then connect the points to see what comes out of it.
- Try abstract backgrounds using watercolor. You can then add objects on it.
- Listen to music and move your brush on the paper, to draw how the music makes you feel.
